(Very) Rough Draft for Title Lettering Cover of Kurdt's Book

My horrible scanner cut off the very end.

So, Kurdt, here's the rough for my amateurish lettering of the cover of your book, "A Smell of Whisky, A Swallow of Blood", which took about 4 or 5 minutes to do. I could not find Nico's cover so I just winged it. Is there anything you'd like me to change about the design (I'll change the little stuff like off-kilter lettering in the finished version) before I do the slick, finished version in Rapidograph pen (Smell of Whisky) and brush (Swallow of Blood)? I'll be a lot more careful with lines for that one (the broadway font would be solid black, the "Swallow of Blood" would be quick, jagged ink brush marks).

Some of this guy(above)'s work is so perverse and disturbing that Crumb couldn't handle it. I had a hard time finding a clean drawing by him (below).


Bruce N. Duncan:

Apparently, one of the great, "crude", cartoonists. I discovered his work in Weirdo magazine a few months before he died in July 2009. Brilliant.


Kazuo Umezu:

Said to be the Japanese master of horror comics. What little I've seen is terrific.


Dave Cooper:

I think the story with Cooper is that he used to draw all comics, now he draws fat women and children's books.


Ho Che Anderson:

His art is beautiful.


Lyonel Feininger:

Did very, very little comics work. I've seen a few of the comics.


John Stanley:

Did the Little Lulu and Nancy comic books.

Bald Eagles:

Mysterious guy. I've seen some of his work.


Rand Holmes:

Underrated underground cartoonist and oil painter, I've read.

Tony Millionaire in Boston, 1989

How in the name of God this unbelievable gem is on Youtube is nearly unfathomable. Millionaire is my favorite newspaper strip cartoonist, and his creation, Maakies, is a piece of some of the almost nonexistant excellent contemporary weekly comic strips. In the video it's pretty obvious he's drunk off his ass.

I will delete my first blog (after posting the drawings I put there on this one), and begin to post my drawings and sculpture here. My first blog is dead already and I need to dispose of the corpse.

Also, I've developed an interest in pinstriping.

Johnny Ryan's comic change

I am a big fan of Johnny Ryan, and noticed that he's dramatically changed the way he does his comics. I have yet to decide if this is good or bad. It depends on if he's going to do this style exclusively from now on, or will do some of his old style comics too. Look for example, this is one of the pages with his well-known brand of humor, which he's developed since he began making comics:

Videos of artists

Painters, cartoonists, etc. become so associated with their work that when people see their stuff, they often have preconceived images in their heads of how the artist looks and sounds and behaves. They're often surprised when and if they see and hear the artist, because almost always the contrived image is completely different from the actual person. There's just something about videos of artist that I like.

Jim Woodring:


One of the Youtube commentors sez Jim Woodring sounds like "a sage". I don't know what that means, but OK.

Robert Crumb:


I can scarcely think of things more entertaining than the great Crumb being interviewed by sleazy old Al Goldstein (above).
